Wisconsin lake resort includes tiny house getaway

If you can't quite imagine yourself living in a tiny home year-round, a tiny resort home in northwest Wisconsin may be the perfect antidote to a stressful urban lifestyle. Canoe Bay Escape Village recently opened the first phase of sales at the first large-scale tiny home vacation village in the Midwest.

The Escape village is adjacent to Canoe Bay, a rustic resort with Prairie-style cottages that were the inspiration for the tiny homes. Dan Dobrowski, owner of Canoe Bay and Escape Homes, worked with architect John Rattenbury, a protege of Frank Lloyd Wright, to design some of the resort cottages on which the tiny homes are based.

The Canoe Bay Escape Village, set on more than 100 acres of forests and wetlands, includes two private lakes. In addition to hiking, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, visitors to the community can dine at the Canoe Bay lakefront dining room.

Many of the lots in Canoe Bay Escape Village have lake and wetland views. Road and utilities are already in place. Each tiny home includes an open floor plan, queen- or king-size beds, full-size appliances and fully appointed kitchens and bathrooms, along with plenty of windows to frame views of the woods and water.

The portable tiny houses can be purchased for $53,000 to $78,500 and placed on lots, some of which require lot premiums. Buyers pay a monthly rent of $450 to $600 for the lot. Tiny resort homes are available for purchase, a vacation rental or a long-term rental. Buyers can rent out their tiny homes to vacationers for income.
