A Fort Walton Beach man has been jailed on charges of unlawfully transmitting HIV, the virus that can cause AIDS.
James Lydell Copeland, who is 26, was denied bond, according to his Fort Walton Beach Police Department arrest report.
The victim told police that she'd had consensual intercourse with Copeland in November 2015. Six months later, she learned she tested positive for the virus.
She told officers that she had had no risky behavior or significant exposure in which she might have contracted it, the report said.
Copeland and his grandmother had told police in 2012 that he was infected with HIV, the report said. During a search warrant, his medical records were obtained and they indicated that he'd tested positive for HIV in August 2009.
When he was interviewed by police in January, Copeland said he'd had consensual sex with the victim and confirmed it was November 2015.
