The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered for a probe into the alleged gangrape of a minor tribal girl and her subsequent suicide in Kunduli of Koraput district.

The decision of the NHRC came after considering the two recent submissions on January 24 and 29 along with the original petition filed by civil rights lawyer Radhakanta Tripathy.

Challenging the finding of the Crime Branch report, the betrayal of boyfriend, not rape was the reason behind her death, Tripathy sought a fair probe into the incident with all legal action with heavy compensation to the victim.

Later, the NHRC directed its DG (Investigation Division) to constitute a team of investigators, conduct a spot inquiry into the matter and submit the report within 15 days. The NHRC has also asked the State Government to cooperate with the team during investigation process and provide necessary reports and documents related to the incident. Notably, a minor tribal girl of Sorisapadar village, who was allegedly gangraped by a group of security personnel on October 10,2017 when she was returning from Kunduli market near the village in Koraput, committed suicide at her house on January 22. The incident had triggered public outrage across the State.

The State Crime Branch was also probing into the incident classifying it as a ‘Red Flag’ case. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had also ordered for a judicial probe into the incident.
