Found not guilty by reason of mental disease, Slender Man stabber Morgan Geyser was sentenced Thursday to a maximum 40 years of state mental health supervision.
She will initially be in mental institution but can petition for less restrictive setting in as little as six months.
Geyser cried quietly and put her head on the table as judge announced his decision.
"She can petition to get out (of the mental institution) every six months, and I presume we’ll do that," Geyser's attorney said after the sentencing.
Prosecutors had asked the judge to order institutional care and said a conditional release would pose a risk to herself and community.
A psychologist testified Geyser scored a 142 on an IQ test, but said "this is a major illness (schizophrenia), and we can expect this will last throughout her lifetime."
The judge said he is satisfied Geyser has done well in an institutional setting, saying she has improved and done much to become more productive.
He also said he satisfied that there is evidence that Geyser is a risk. She poses a risk of significant bodily harm to herself or to others.
During the hearing, Geyser apologized to the victim and her family, "I never meant for it to happen, and I hope she’s doing well."
