KEWANEE –– Wethersfield closed out Lincoln Trail Conference play with a 61-49 win over Mercer County on senior night.
With four seniors in the starting lineup for Wethersfield – Tori Rashid, Kirsten Hager, Makayla Hulslander and Katie Perez – the Lady Geese played Mercer County even the first couple minutes, with Hulslander registering the first points for the Geese.
Trailing 10-7 after a pair of Emma Coulter treys, the hosts reeled off eight straight points, capped by four straight from Brittney Litton to grab the lead.
The Lady Geese shot 7 for 11 in the first and built a 17-14 edge.
Wethersfield took its biggest lead of the half at 21-14 after a Rashid layup, before Mercer County ran off a 13-2 run. They hit three straight treys during the run to grab the lead.
A late basket by Dani Hagens gave the Golden Eagles a 34-33 halftime advantage.
The third quarter was disasterous for the Golden Eagles. The visitors shot 2 of 9 from the field, while committing 8 fouls and 12 turnovers in the quarter.
Lexi Nichols and Litton scored seven each in the period for the Lady Geese, who closed the frame with a 13-0 charge finished by a Taylor Lay corner trey.
Mercer County outscored Wethersfield 9-8 in the final period.
Although Wednesday was technically senior night, the Lady Geese will have at least one more home game as they host regionals next week.
Litton scored 19 for the Lady Geese, who move to 22-8 on the season. Nichols finished with 16 points.
