Students at Sturgis High School present "Mary Poppins" Feb. 2-4.
Rehearsals for Sturgis High School’s presentation of Disney’s “Mary Poppins” are going well, said Patricia Goble, middle school/high school choir teacher at Sturgis Public Schools and co-director of the musical with Eliot Gitelman.
The musical is presented 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2-3 and 2 p.m. Feb. 4 at Sturges-Young Auditorium.
“The show is really coming together,” Goble said Tuesday. “The cast, crew, and pit orchestra have been working incredibly hard in preparation for our shows. We can’t wait for everyone to see this amazing show.”
Students have been rehearsing since late November, Goble said.
This is her first year as choir director at Sturgis Public Schools and her first time as director of a musical.
“It’s very exciting,” Goble said in a previous interview with the Journal. “I was thrilled to start the musical process and work with these fantastic students who love performing.”
Goble said the play features many sing-along songs and exciting moments, and she admires students’ efforts.
“Everyone is really giving their all,” she said. “It’s a great show for children and people of all ages. It brings back some nostalgia for those who grew up watching the movie.”
Forty-one students are in the cast, and numerous others are in the pit and backstage crews.
“We have a lot of students involved in the show,” Goble said. “We have pulled students from all departments. We have the art department helping us with some design posters and some set design. We have students in our technical classes who are helping build our set and put all the pieces together. It has really been a whole-school engagement.”
