Several students were taken to the hospital for treatment after police used pepper spray to extinguish a fight at a high school basketball game in Winston-Salem on Wednesday.
The incident began with cheerleaders during a late timeout of the Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy at Carver High School game, according to FOX8.
Five officers used the spray, sending three people to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries, according to local reports.
“The attendees got into it,” police Lt. Manny Gomez told the Winston-Salem Journal.
The fight began about 9:30 p.m. as Winston-Salem Prep led the game 73-51, according to the Journal. A witness told the local newspaper it took police 20 to 30 minutes to gain control of the situation after fans left the stands to fight.
Neither school’s players or coaches were involved in the incident, the report said. An investigation is ongoing.
