And you might think you know all there is to know about the infamous day.

But aside from Punxsutawney Phil, emerging from his burrow, and looking for his shadow, here are some fun facts according to Time Inc I bet you didn’t know.

For example, groundhog day didn’t always involve groundhogs.

It actually started with German tradition that used a hedgehog.

When German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania they adapted the custom to use the more common groundhog.

Punxsutawney Phil might be treated like royalty, but this wasn’t always the case.

When the tradition first came to the US they probably ate the groundhog.

There isn’t one Punxsutawney Phil, he is actually an immortal character.

And if groundhog living in captivity can live up to 10 years, then there have been about about 13 groundhogs.

And finally Punxsutawney Phil is actually a married fella.

His wife Phyllis and him hibernate together all winter.
