Groton Public Library will sponsor a series on the opioid crisis Feb. 5, 8, 15 and 22 with activities, films and discussions held at the library, 52 Newtown Road, Groton.

A presentation will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 5 titled “The Rise and Fall (?) of the Opioid Epidemic.” Michael Saxe, of the Middlesex Hospital Emergency Department, will discuss the history of opioid drugs, the causes and impact of today’s opioid epidemic and what must be done, by health care providers and laypeople, to end it.

The library will screen a film at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 8 that offers a look into the lives of four addicts. The film is rated R. A panel discussion led by Ken Edwards of Community Speaks Out will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 15. He will moderate a discussion addressing the epidemic with a particular focus on local efforts and statistics.

The final program is a naloxone training session for the public. Naloxone works by blocking or reversing the effects of opioids. When administered, it can bring someone out of overdose and help them to breathe on their own.
