Police arrested a Hutchinson woman Wednesday for stabbing her boyfriend in the back with a butter knife late last month – and landing him in the hospital for nearly a week.

Tatumn Marie Lea Watkins, 20, was arrested just before 2 p.m. Wednesday on a single count of aggravated battery in connection with the Jan. 22 stabbing.

The victim, Jerrell Bell, 25, of Hutchinson, told police he was standing at a sink washing dishes in Watkins' apartment on East 23rd Avenue when the couple got into an argument and Watkins stabbed him twice in the back, first on the right side and then the left.

“He realized the knife was still in his back and had Tatumn remove the knife,” according to an arrest affidavit read by Reno County Magistrate Cheryl Allen during the woman’s initial court appearance.

“The knife turned out to be a butter knife, and you disposed of it,” Allen stated. “After read your Miranda (rights), you admitted to stabbing him in the back after arguing and throwing the knife away.”

Allen found probable cause for the arrest and set the case on her Feb. 8 status docket.

When Watkins asked Allen to lower her $10,000 bond, the judge noted the knife punctured Bell’s lung, requiring a hose be inserted in the lung to drain it.

“The problem I have with lowering bond is this man spent five days in the hospital,” Allen said. “This isn’t a tiny little incident. This is significant. We could be sitting here talking about you charged with some type of murder charge. … This is a significant and serious charge.”
