Beechcroft High School senior boys basketball player Jelani Simmons surpassed 1,000 points for his prep career during his team’s 86-72 victory over Northland on Jan. 30.

A Youngstown State signee, Simmons scored 19 points and now has 1,002 overall.

“It means a lot to be the third person in school history to reach 1,000 points,” said Simmons, a 6-foot-5 guard. “(It’s a) big accomplishment. It felt like a dream come true.”

With the win over the Vikings, Beechcroft improved to 15-1 overall and 11-0 in the City League-North Division. The victory also earned the Cougars at least a share of their first league championship since 1994.

Beechcroft needs just one more league victory to advance to the City championship game Feb. 17.
