Overlooked art
Each year the Newport Art Museum receives more work than it can accept at its Juried Members Show. Through Feb. 19, Blink Gallery's Salon de Refusés exhibit will display more than 20 works that were not selected. First Friday music
Jen Shyu will perform her solo piece "Nine Doors" Friday at 8 p.m. at the Music Mansion, 88 Meeting St., Providence. The work is inspired by Shyu's study of traditional music from Korea, Indonesia, East Timor and Taiwan, as well as by the young daughter of a friend who survived an accident that killed her parents and sibling. Robots in action
More than two dozen Rhode Island middle school and high school teams will participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the New England Institute of Technology's Center for Automotive Technology, 101 Access Rd., Warwick. Sing-along at Odeum
Fans of all ages are invited to sing along with Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and the rest of the cast during a screening of the 1964 classic "Mary Poppins" Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Greenwich Odeum, 59 Main St., East Greenwich. Community poetry reading
The 23rd annual Langston Hughes Community Poetry Reading takes place Sunday from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Providence Public Library auditorium, 150 Empire St., Providence.
