SUMMERFIELD — No injuries were reported following a natural gas pipeline explosion in a field adjacent to Route 513 outside Summerfield in Noble County early Wednesday morning.
Fire crews from the Summerfield, Caldwell and Belle Valley departments were dispatched to the scene after the explosion was reported at approximately 2:30 a.m.
According to Noble County Emergency Management Agency Director Chasity Schmelzenbach, the resulting fire was contained as of 4:30 a.m.
"There was an explosion and a fire, but no injuries were reported and no evacuations were necessary," said Schmelzenbach. "There are multiple lines in the same footprint, but the companies with lines in that area have shut-in their wells and the fire is considered contained."
The explosion and resulting response by emergency providers limited access to Route 513 near the scene at mile post 3 in eastern Noble County.
The Noble County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol and United Ambulance assisted at the scene.
At press time, Schmelzenbach said she was not sure what size line exploded. The cause of the explosion was also not known.
Responders were checking gas lines in the nearby woods to ensure the fire was fully contained.
Crews from the companies with pipelines in the area were responding to the scene to assess the damage and work on necessary repairs once the fire is extinguished.
Additional information was not available as of press time Wednesday.
