MR ALLISON of Bishop Auckland may or may not have a political agenda for his depressing view of our country (HAS, Jan 29). In any event it’s not a view I ascribe to.
Our police service is not “ineffective.”

Is our NHS in “crisis”?
Despite being under-resourced it deals with more people year on year and provides a great service which I use and am grateful for.
Is Bishop Auckland “knee deep in litter”?
It is not and though it has problems the town has a fantastic history and heritage which is being recognised and developed through the Auckland Project.
Mr Allison asks why do the immigrants in Calais want to come here to this country rather than supposedly “civilised” France?
The answer is that unlike France and particularly Paris which is illiberal and intolerant, we have a society which is diverse, largely supports those from minority backgrounds and has more employment opportunities.
Yes we have problems too.
Intense negativity won’t solve them.
