Suits Snags Katherine Heigl as Series Regular

Katherine Heigl is headed to the courtroom!

Suits has added Grey's Anatomy alum Katherine Heigl to its Season 8 cast in the wake of two big departures. Both Patrick J. Adams and Meghan Markle will exit the show after Season 7, meaning Suits needed to get some fresh blood in the water to keep things alive.

"Joining Suits was the perfect organic way to not only collaborate with an EP I admire deeply, but to also become part of a show and cast that I am an immense fan of," Heigl said in a statement. "I have watched Suits from the very beginning and feel incredibly lucky to be the newest member of the Pearson Specter Litt family."

Heigl will play Samantha Wheeler, a talented new partner at the firm who "challenges the status quo and will either become the firm's greatest ally or most powerful enemy," according to USA. For those worried that Heigl's character would be a retread of old territory, it fortunately doesn't sound like Samantha will simply be a tweaked version of the departed Jessica (Gina Torres) or a Rachel, but a totally new character entirely.

Suits Is Renewed for Season 8 -- But Who Isn't Coming Back?

"One thing is for sure," creator and executive producer Aaron Korsh said in a statement, "Samantha's wit, charm, loyalty, strength and vulnerability will all be put to the test as she muscles her way into the firm currently known as Pearson Specter Litt."

This addition of Heigl to the cast comes on the heels of the news that Dulé Hill, who co-starred opposite Heigl in CBS' Doubt, has been upped to series regular for Season 8.

Can these newbies fill the void left by Rachel and Mike? And more importantly, will Laverne Cox be the next Doubt alum we'll see turn up on Suits? We wouldn't say no to that!

Suits will resume Season 7 on Wednesday, March 28 at 9/8c on USA.
