BELMONT — Two women were injured and hundreds or residents lost power in Belmont on Tuesday afternoon when a crossover utility vehicle plowed into a utility pole, police said.

The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. when a black 2014 Honda CRV heading south on Alameda de las Pulgas left the roadway near Monroe Avenue, drove up an embankment and hit a utility pole, according to police.

Police said the impact broke the pole off at its base and knocked out power to 500 people.

Two women in the Honda were treated at the scene for minor injuries, according to police.

Police said the cause of the collision is under investigation, but neither alcohol nor drugs appear to have played a role. No other vehicles were involved.

Alameda de las Pulgas was closed between Cipriani Boulevard and Forest Avenue so that crews with Pacific Gas & Electric Co. could make repairs, including installing a new utility pole, according to police. The roadway was expected to reopen in time for the Wednesday morning commute.

Monroe Avenue also was closed at Alameda, but there was no estimated time for it to reopen.
