BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – It’s been quite the journey for the Belichick family.

This past season, Steve Belichick, the oldest son of Bill Belichick, entered his fifth year with the Patriots and second as the team’s safeties coach. The 2017 season and this playoff run, however, has been special since it marks the first that he’s worked with his youngest brother – Brian Belichick – on the coaching staff.

Last year, the youngest of the three Belichick siblings worked in the scouting department before helping the coaching staff during the playoff run. This year, he was promoted to coaching assistant where he worked with the defensive coaches.

“It’s definitely been different,” Steve Belichick said. “Obviously, he spent a lot more time with the coaches and scouts. He was kind of doing his thing last year… so it’s good to have him on the defensive staff and working with him every day. Not that I wasn’t teaching him last year, but being able to interact with him more and teach him more relevant things I guess has been really fun. I love being with him. I’m trying to shape his mind.”

Steve Belichick has been a welcomed addition to the Patriots staff. His fellow coaches admire his work ethic. Linebackers coach Brian Flores said he wouldn’t be surprised to see him as a defensive coordinator one day. Steve also thinks his brother has a bright future.

As impressive as Steve’s been as the Patriots safeties coach, he says that his youngest brother is smarter.

“I’m much a much better athlete than him so it’s no problem. But yeah, he is, he’s really smart,” Steve said. “He’s such an analytical thinker. He almost hurts himself because he’s an over thinker at times. He breaks it down so small, it’s so impressive. It’s really impressive to watch him and the stuff he comes up with. He’s really smart.”
