Minimal damage after field fire

PITTSBURG — On Tuesday a grass fire caused minimal damage.

The Baker Township Fire Department was advised of a grass fire at 2:58 p.m. in a field on 210th  Street.

The fire spread toward Atkinson Road and ran behind four houses. It spread approximately a quarter and a half mile, Baker Chief Mike Ryan said.

He said the fire was put out fairly quickly and they were back at the station by 6 p.m.

There was no damage to the homes, no injuries and minimal damage to a garage.

Ryan said the cause of the fire was from a burn brush near the site on Saturday, which leftover embers were blown into the field by the wind.

Ryan said to be cautious when burning and to check the National Weather Service for hazardous weather for elevated fire conditions or the department’s Facebook page at Crawford County Fire District No.1.

He said with the low humidity, wind and lack of precipitation it would be best not to burn until conditions are better.

Baker has responded to several grass fires in the past few weeks, Ryan said.

According to the National Weather Service there is a hazardous weather outlook for elevated fire weather conditions until Wednesday evening for portions of Missouri and extreme southeast Kansas.
