Liverpool SLAMMED for selling Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona by Sky Sports pundit

LIVERPOOL risked their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League by selling Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

Philippe Coutinho GETTY

Philippe Coutinho joined Barcelona earlier this month

That’s according to Telegraph football correspondent and Sky Sports pundit Jason Burt.

The Brazilian finalised a long-awaited switch the Nou Camp earlier this month for a fee of £142m.

The move has left a gaping hole in Liverpool’s midfield and boss Jurgen Klopp has made it clear that he won't be rushed into splashing out on a replacement this month.

The Reds are the second highest scorers in this season’s Premier League and face a European knockout tie against Porto next month.

But Burt believes that losing such a vital component from their attack could come back to bite them.

“Big clubs tend not to sell big players in January to put yourself under pressure for the second half of the season.”

"Someone is going to miss out on the top four," he told The Debate.

"Last season, Manchester United managed to get into the Champions League via the back door, and it'll be a big disappointment if Liverpool don't do it. It's a risk and they've rolled the dice with what they've done here.

"It's the manager having faith in what he's got and trying to hold his nerve. I think he's definitely got a couple of deals in the summer that he's lined up, but he's probably thinking he can't get these players now, and he's got enough to get them through.

Liveprool boss Jurgen Klopp insists he is not seeking a replacement for Philippe Coutinho

"Barcelona were under pressure to do this deal, the players will have put the club under pressure following the sale of Neymar and Klopp has probably thought, 'I can do without this.'”

Liverpool are currently fourth in the Premier League, six points behind second-placed Manchester United.

They’re back in action this evening as they travel to Huddersfield.
