‘Law and order in State could be at risk’

PMK founder S. Ramadoss on Monday demanded a CBI inquiry into the illegal sale of pistols in Chennai and Tiruchi districts, in the wake of the recent arrest of a policeman and others who were dealing in unlicensed weapons.

In a statement, Mr. Ramadoss alleged that the sale of unlicensed pistols had grown markedly in Tamil Nadu and expressed shock over the potential involvement of police officers in the racket.

‘Pervasive practice’

“Five unlicensed pistols and counterfeit currency with a face value of ₹14 lakh were seized from two persons who came to Chennai on the Guwahati-Thiruvananthapuram train. A policeman was also arrested in connection with the case. This shows that the sale of unlicensed pistols is taking place throughout Tamil Nadu,” the PMK leader alleged.

Contending that this was not an isolated incident, he claimed it indicated the likelihood of the systematic sale of unlicensed pistols in Tamil Nadu. “If pistols are being sold in a growing market, the State’s law and order could be in danger,” said Mr. Ramadoss, and called for action against all those involved in the racket.
