The Hubballi Dharwad Municipal Council meeting here on Monday witnessed an incident of the municipal commissioner taking on a BJP councillor who accused him of indulging in a “mischievous act”.
The incident happened when Municipal Commissioner Major Siddalingayya Hiremath and Mayor D.K. Chavan returned to the council meeting after hearing grievances of a few woman protesters. During zero hour, the BJP councillor, Shivanand Muttannavar, started accusing the municipal commissioner of showing disrespect to elected representatives and indulging in “mischievous act”.
Taking him on, Major Hiremath sought to know what “mischievous act” he had indulged in. Confronting the councillor with facts, the commissioner clarified that he could not and would not do anything that was against law.
He chided the councillor and sought to know whether the corporation can take up development work on a place donated by an organisation, which did not own the land. “If I do anything of this sort, then others will also start donating property not owned by them. Can we accept that?” he asked.
Taken aback, Mr. Muttannavar tried to give a reply, but as there were none to support him, he sat down in his seat.
