WESTERLY, R.I. — A 50-year-old Westerly man is facing a first-degree murder charge after a deadly stabbing late Saturday.
The police arrested and charged with murder Nelson Dearce, of 65 Bowling Lane, after being called to his apartment around 11 p.m. and finding 50-year-old Jeremy Lehmann of Niantic, Connecticut, with multiple stab wounds, according to a news release from Police Chief Richard G. Silva.
Lehmann was taken to Westerly Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.According to Silva, Lehmann was visiting Dearce's apartment, where Dearce lived with his ex-girlfriend and their four children, while Dearce was away. Dearce came home and became upset at finding Lehmann there, confronted him and attacked him, stabbing him multiple times with a knife, Silva said. Dearce's ex-girlfriend and children were in another room at the time of the attack.
Officers found Dearce outside the apartment and he was taken into custody without incident. He was also taken to the hospital, where he was treated for lacerations to his hands that police believe occurred during the attack.
Dearce was held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions overnight after his arraignment before a justice of peace Sunday, police said. He was arraigned again Monday morning in District Court before Judge Stephen Isherwood. He did not enter a plea, as is customary in felony cases. He remains held without bail and a bail hearing is set for Feb. 7.
According to electronic court records, the case has been referred to a grand jury.
