FORT MEADE – The Fort Meade boy's soccer team has been on a bit of a roller coaster ride, not only this season but for the last couple years.

But Coach Lynne Haase is hoping things are stable enough at the moment for the Miners to make a big run in the Class 2A, District 10 playoffs this year.

They got things started in the right direction Monday night with an 8-0 win over visiting Tenoroc in a quarterfinal matchup. The Miners will play in Lake Placid in the semifinals Tuesday evening.

This year, Fort Meade lost it's leading threat, and his 17 goals, at the Christmas break because his family moved out of the district. On Senior Night, Fort Meade lost starting winger Sergio Velazquez to a broken collar bone. And keeping a steady roster year to year has been a bit of challenge as well.

“We're just working together now. I've got a lot of guys that had been on the team, and for whatever reason were not on the team and now they're back, and some guys that have had to change positions,” Haase said. “We've been adjusting on the fly. It's taken us a while to get in order, but the offense is starting to pick it up.”

Fort Meade spread the wealth offensively Monday night as seven different players scored. Only Mario Roldan tallied twice, once in the six-goal first half on a penalty kick after a Tenoroc handball in the box, and on a beautiful 30-yard strike late in the second half. He has 22 goals on the season now.

Single Miner tallies came from Rafael Garcia, Andres Hernandez, Gerardo Maza, Ever Escalante, Samuel Garcia and Matthew Yeager. Meza's score, which gave the hosts a 4-0 lead 22 minutes into the game, came on a big bender from close to the left corner kick spot which curled inside the far post.

The Miners, who improved to 12-7-4, had two regular season wins over Tenoroc, by scores of 6-2 and 6-1. The Titans ended their year at 2-20-1.

Fort Meade lost early in the season to Lake Placid, and then battled them to a tie later at home.

“We're pretty evenly matched. We went there I think second game of the season, we were tied 2-2 at halftime then we got a little loose in the back end and it got away. At the end of the season, we got them here and it was a 2-2 draw and I mean both teams really had to fight for the two,” Haase added.
