No one was injured in a fire that cause damage to the exterior of a Burlington home Monday morning because of an improperly installed chimney.
Burlington Fire Marshal Mark Crooks said emergency crews responded to the report of a fire about 9 a.m. at 1205 S. 13th St. in Burlington.
"Firefighters arrived four minutes later to find the outside of the house on fire," he said. "Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames and limited the fire damage to the outside of the two-story house."
Crooks said the home was "owned and occupied by Richard and Martha Douglas," who escaped uninjured.
"The fire was discovered by construction workers working on a roof of a nearby home," Crooks said. "They called 911 to report the fire while also assisting the occupants."
Crooks said the house sustained an estimated $1,500 in damage to the structure and is insured.
"The fire started due to an improperly installed chimney for a wood burning stove," he said, adding there were no working smoke detectors inside the home.
Burlington firefighters responded with 15 on-duty personnel and were assisted by two West Burlington firefighters responding on automatic aid. Firefighters remained on scene until 10:15 a.m.
