A man has been pulled alive from a home engulfed by fire before it collapsed early today.

Fire and Emergency southern shift manager Brent Dunn said local crews called for back up before going into the Poole St, Motueka, house and rescuing a person from a front room just before 5am.

"It was excellent work from them.

"I don't know his condition but they pulled him out of the house," he said.
