Police yesterday filed a case against 147 leaders and activists of BNP on the charge of "creating chaos" centring on a programme of the party in Gazipur on Sunday.
Sub-inspector Arshad Mia of Joydebpur Police Station filed the case, accusing BNP chief's advisory council member Zainul Abedin Faruk, Gazipur district BNP President Fazlul Haque Milon and Secretary Kazi Sayeedul Alam Babul.
Gazi Sultan Shahjahan Jewel, central communications secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, has been named as the main accused in the case.
Officer-in-Charge of the police station Amanul Islam said two group of BNP activists were locked in a clash on Sunday centring on a joint meeting of the party, creating panic among people.
When the police intervened, the activists started throwing brickbats at them, said Amanul.
Police arrested 17 people from the spot, he said, adding that the arrestees were sent to jail yesterday.
Brushing aside the allegations of police, Gazipur district BNP President Fazlul Haque said no such chaos took place in the meeting.
He said the allegations are baseless and provocative.
