The disciplinary committee of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday recommended suspension of two students who "verbally abused" two female teachers.
It also recommended forming a probe body to look into the incident further, said a member of the committee on condition of anonymity.
The students are Armanul Islam Khan, a fourth-year student of law and justice department, and Nur Uddin Md Sanaul, a master's student of economics department and also the organising secretary of JU BCL unit.
The recommendations came after two female teachers of geography and environment department filed a written complaint with the university proctor against the students on January 26.
On the other hand, the students also filed a complaint with the university authorities the same day alleging that the teachers -- Ummeh Saika, associate professor, and Nahreen Islam Khan, assistant professor -- had "abused and threatened" them.
About the recommendation of suspension, the alleged students said it is a "one-sided judgement" as the authorities did not pay heed to the complaints filed by them.
The decision was made taking into consideration the teachers' complaints only, they added.
In this regard, JU BCL President Jewel Rana said, "We urged the authorities to take into consideration the complaints of the students. We do not expect any one-sided judgement…"
Echoing the same, Bangladesh Chhatra Union president of JU unit Imran Nadim said the authorities were rushing in for a solution.
They should do the due diligence to look into the matter before executing the recommendation, he said.
Meanwhile, teachers of the geography and environment department yesterday boycotted classes and examinations demanding exemplary punishment for the two students.
Contacted, Prof Shahedur Rashid, acting chairman of the department, said they would call a departmental meeting today and withdraw their programme as there is a "visible progress" in punishing the students.
Asked, the two female teachers said they have nothing to say about the decision of the department.
