Aceh police lop off hair of transgender women

BANDA ACEH • Police in the Indonesian province of Aceh forcibly cut the hair of a group of transgender women and made them wear male clothing, said the authorities yesterday, amid a crackdown on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

The incident happened after police on Sunday raided several beauty salons in conservative Aceh and rounded up their transgender employees over claims that they had teased a group of boys. Police then lopped off some of the transgender women's long hair with scissors and forced them to wear male clothing and speak in a masculine voice.
