MULBERRY — A two-car crash in Mulberry on Saturday night resulted in the death of a Bartow man.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office reported a vehicle crash at State Road 60 at County Line Road at about 9:45 p.m. involved a 1998 four-door Mercedes-Benz driven by Reginald Rogers, 39, of Bartow and a 2006 Toyota Rav driven by Eloy Pedro of Mulberry.
According to Michele Cash, a spokeswoman with the Sheriff's Office, witnesses at the scene said Rogers entered into the eastbound outside lane of S.R. 60 from a convenience store on the south side of the roadway. At the same time, Pedro was going east on S.R. 60 — also in the outside lane. Rogers reportedly pulled out of the convenience store approximately 75 feet east of the traffic signal and was hit in the rear by the front of Pedro's Toyota.
The Mercedes-Benz had significant rear end damage and went approximately 50 feet east before stopping northeast in the inside lane, according to a Sheriff's Office report. Pedro's car went southeast and stopped in a shallow ditch on the south side of S.R. 60.
Cash said based on the driver and witness interviews, Pedro had a green light just prior to the crash and Rogers violated the right-of-way by pulling out in front of him from the parking lot and entering the lane in front of Pedro’s car.
Airbags did not deploy in Rogers’ car and it's unclear whether he was wearing a seat belt. He was declared dead at the scene.
Pedro, 28, reportedly had his seat belt on and the front airbags in his car deployed. He was booked into the Polk County Jail for not having a valid Florida driver license. He posted a $250 bond Sunday and was released, said Cash.
Eastbound S.R. 60 in the area of the crash was closed for about four hours.
The investigation is ongoing.
