The body of a newborn girl was found in a dustbin near the Safdarjung Hospital mortuary in south Delhi on Monday, the police said.

A senior officer said the police received a PCR call regarding the newborn’s body in the dustbin.

“From the body tag, we discovered that the premature baby was born to a 25-year-old woman at 11.58 p.m. on January 27. The baby was stillborn and weighed 1.42 kg,” said a police officer.

The baby’s parents were traced to Rajapuri in Delhi with the help of hospital records. The baby’s father said his wife had given birth to a premature stillborn girl. The hospital authorities handed over her body to the parents after completing formalities. Clueless about the cremation procedure, the father dumped the body in the dustbin.

No lapses were found in procedure adopted by the hospital while handing over the body to the family, the police said.
