CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A 29-year veteran of sales and marketing who once designed wet suits for a surfing company in Australia has been named the new publisher of the Nevada Appeal.

Sierra Nevada Media Group announced 49-year-old Michael "Mick" Raher's appointment last week at the newspaper in Carson City.

Raher, who was the group's sales director, replaces Brooke Warner, the group's general manager who had been serving as publisher on an interim basis.

In addition to starting out designing wet suits for the surfing company Piping Hot, Raher said he tested the material by hitting some waves near his hometown in Geelong, Victoria and spent winter months skiing in southeastern Australia.

He moved to the United States in 1995 and managed a community newspaper in Ramona, California before joining Sierra Nevada Media Group in 2016.
