Tamil Nadu, which has a coastal line of 1,076 km, has sought Rs 1,143.56 crore from the Centre to roll out a massive shoreline management project besides addressing sea erosion caused by climate change, under Green Climate Fund, while stressing on the project’s benefits which will be passed on to at least 13.66 lakh people both directly and indirectly.

A reminder has been sent to Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Harsh Vardhan by Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar to expedite the process as the proposal is pending approval from the Union government. 

The communiqué, a copy of which is available with DT Next, states the project has the potential for better development of the coastal areas as it aims to develop comprehensive shoreline management plan and to promote livelihood development activities on a stretch of 54.25 km. 

“The vulnerable coastline stretches are spread across four districts,” it added. “This Green Climate Fund would be a boon to the fishermen, since this project would alleviate the sufferings of the people,” the communiqué said. Considering its priority, the letter urged the Union government to clear the project to address the sea erosion by climate change. 

When contacted, Jayakumar said that they have already sent the project for approval and recently sent a reminder to the Centre.  “It will benefit the state in big way as it is aimed at improving the shoreline management which is,” he said.
