Pulse polio: 3.18 lakh children immunised in Coimbatore

Government staff, volunteers from NGOs and nursing students roped in for the drive

Around 95.69% of the targeted 3.32 lakh children in Coimbatore district were covered under the pulse polio immunisation drive conducted on Sunday.

Minister for Municipal Administration S.P. Velumani inaugurated the programme at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital in the presence of District Collector T.N. Hariharan and MLAs Amman Arjunan and P.R.G. Arun Kumar.

A release issued here said that 3.18 lakh children were administered polio drops through 401 centres under the jurisdiction of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation and 1,180 centres established in rural areas of the district.

As many as 6,500 workers drawn from various government departments, volunteers from NGOs, nursing students, employees of mid-day meal scheme and health workers were deployed for the programme.

In city corporation limits, as many as 1.62 lakh children were administered polio drops at 53 urban health centres, 129 anganwadis, private hospitals, 45 schools, railway station, and bus stand, a release from the corporation adds.

Tirupur Staff Reporter adds:

As many as 2,15,492 children out of the total 2,20,040 children aged up to five years were administered pulse polio drops in the district during the pulse polio immunisation drive held on Sunday.

The immunisation coverage in the district thus stood at 97.9 %.

A total of 1,170 booths were set up across the district to administer the oral anti-poliomyelitis drops to the children.

Deputy Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine K. R. Jayanthi said the remaining children would be immunised through door-to-door campaigns and special drives over the next few days.

Earlier on the day, Minister for Animal Husbandry Udumalai Radhakrishnan inaugurated the drive in the district at Udumalpet in the presence of Collector K. S. Palanisamy and health department officials.
