As the weekend’s showers move toward the coast, below freezing temperatures Monday night or Tuesday morning might bring a few snow showers to Central and Eastern North Carolina.

On Monday, temperatures will peak between 40 and 50 degrees but will drop below freezing tonight. There’s a chance that the rain moving across the Piedmont and into the Coastal Plains on Monday night and Tuesday morning will briefly mix with snow, according to the National Weather Service in Raleigh.

“Precipitation finally exits to our east by Tuesday morning in the form of light rain showers that may also briefly mix with a few snow flurries across the northern Piedmont counties,” the weather service said.

Tuesday will be sunny, cold and breezy.

Temperatures in the Triangle and throughout Central North Carolina will range from the upper 20s to low 30s Monday night and into Tuesday morning, the weather service said.

As colder and drier air settles in, temperatures will struggle to climb on Tuesday, with highs in the lower 40s in the Triangle and in the upper 40s near the coast.

Winds of 8 to 12 mph are expected in the Triangle on Tuesday, with gusts up to 20 mph. No major power outages are expected, but a few are not out of the question, the weather service said.

By Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures are expected to climb to the mid 40s and upper 50s.

Rain showers are expected Friday, but they should clear by Saturday.
