Police: Stoughton teen ran away from Boston cops with gun in hand

Police say the 19-year-old man reached into his jacket and ran away with a gun in his hand.

BOSTON — A Stoughton man ran away from officers Saturday evening while holding a gun in his hand, police said.

Officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force, also known as the Gang Unit, stopped a man who was believed to have a firearm near Ames Street and Ames Way about 7 p.m.

"When officers approached the individual to further investigate the incident in an effort to confirm the presence of a firearm, the individual attempted to make good his escape by running away from the approaching officers," Boston police said in a written statement.

The officers began pursuing the man on foot and observed him reaching for and grabbing a gun out of his right jacket pocket, police said. The officers immediately issued verbal commands, demanding the man drop the gun, but he continued running away, police said.

After a lengthy foot pursuit, the suspect, identified by police as Jerion Moore, was arrested in the area of 81 Floyd St.

"A search of the suspect for the gun proved unsuccessful," the statement said. "However, when officers traced the steps taken by the suspect during the foot pursuit, they were able to locate the firearm along a fence inside a neighboring yard in the area of 89 Floyd Street."

Moore, 19, of Stoughton, was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and illegally carrying a loaded firearm on a public way.

The gun, which police say was a black 9mm Sig Sauer loaded with seven bullets, was one of four seized by Boston police within six hours.

Moore is expected to be arraigned Monday in Boston Municipal Court.
