Sales of smartphones in Mexico soared to 96.8 million in the third quarter of 2017, up from 90.7 million at the end of 2016 and 77.3 million at the end of 2015, according to final data released by The Competitive Intelligence Unit (CIU). The country’s smartphone penetration reached 85.8 percent of mobile lines at the end of September, some 14.8 percent higher than the year-earlier quarter, with Samsung continuing to dominate the sector with 34.6 percent of sales, up 0.6 percent compared to Q2.

Apple rose 2 percent to reach 14.3 percent of the market and overtake LG, which lost nearly 3 percent since the start of the year to end up on 13.5 percent, ahead of Motorola with 8.0 percent, Alcatel with 6.5 percent and Huawei with 4.4 percent.

Analysts expect the aggressive commercial strategy of Xiaomi to shake up the market this year, especially following the official launch of its Mi A1 and Redmi Note A5 smartphones in Mexico, while Huawei is set to start selling its Honor brand smartphones in the country for the first time.
