UK weather: Heavy rain to sweep across Britain as temperatures plummet into single figures

HEAVY rain will sweep across the UK which could disrupt the morning commute as temperatures across the country plummet into single figures by Tuesday, the Met Office’s Greg Dewhurst has forecast.

The rain and cloud will clear on Monday night resulting in a potentially frosty start on Tuesday

Northern parts of Wales and the Midlands will be hit with heavy downpours before rain clouds work their way southwards.

Mr Dewhurst explained: “First thing on Monday morning we are looking at a wet start across northern Wales across into east Yorkshire, some of the rain will be heavy for the commute to work.

“But then slowly through the morning and into the afternoon the rain will push its way southeastwards.

“So it will cross the rest of England and Wales, just becoming light and patchy as it reaches the London area.

“Brighter skies will follow on behind the band of rain, there will be plenty of sunshine but there will still be a scattering of showers being blown in on a north-westerly breeze.

“But with that breeze it will feel cooler - temperatures will be five or six degrees in Scotland compared to 11 or 12 but cloudier conditions towards the far south-east.”

The rain and cloud cover will clear on Monday night resulting in a potentially frosty start on Tuesday.

Mr Dewhurst went on: “As we go through Monday evening the cloud and rain will soon clear away, clearing skies for many. There are still some showers across Northern Ireland into western parts of Scotland, some of these will be wintery at times.

“But with clear skies across much of England and Wales, there will be a much colder night to come - the lows will be about freezing in the towns and cities leading to a touch of frost and below freezing in the countryside.

“This will mean a lovely, sunny start to the day on Tuesday morning. However we will see showers increasing through Tuesday, in fact we will see a more persistent band of rain push into western parts of Scotland during the afternoon.

“But much of England, Wales and Northern Ireland staying dry with sunny spells.

“There is a low risk of some thicker cloud and patchy rain affecting the south-west of England at times. But the temperates will only be feeling six or seven at best, so it will feel much cooler.”

Roads remain relatively clear for the start of the working week but could worsen as the heavy band of rain hits Britain.
