AREA COLLEGES: Stonehill women's track wins tournament

The Stonehill College women’s indoor track and field team finished first at the inaugural Branwen Smith-King Invitational.

Stonehill had 173.33 points to lead the 16-team field in a meet held at Tufts University.

Olivia Dexter won the 200-meter race to qualify for the New England Championships and was fourth in the long jump.

Krista Fernandes of Taunton won the 400-meter race and Anna Lastra qualified for the New Englands after winning the 3,000.

Also earning spots in the New Englands was Shayla Lyons (second in the shot put).

Junior Makenzie Cyr was first in the 5,000 to reach the New Englands with Isabel Baker placing second and Jillian Caiazzi was first in the 800-meter run.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Elizabeth Hannon, Jillian Caiazzi, Alyssa Freeman and Kelly Higgins won

Andrews breaks record: Bridgewater State University junior Jayci Andrews of Plymouth broke her own school record in the 60-meter hurdles for the fourth time this season.

Andrews finished first at the Wheaton Invitational in 8.93 seconds and ranks sixth nationally in Division 3.

She was also first in the 400 with a season-best time of 59.74 seconds.

Also winning events for the Bears were Kira Gilbreath (shopt put) and Patricia Healion (high jump).

 

Men’s track and field

Stonehill takes title: Stonehill finished first at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational, held at Tufts University, with 147 points.

Hampton Boyd won the 400 and Justin Ireland was first in the 200 and Jimmy Murphy took the 3,000.

Stonehill’s 4x800 relay team of David Lockhart of Stoughton, Christopher Drace, Matthew Shaw and Riley Dowd was first. Lockhart was also third in the 800.

The 4x400 relay team of Daniel Madsen, Boyd, Stephen Vercollone and Desmond Bernal was second.

Vercollone, of Pembroke, also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division 2 Championships at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational, hosted by Boston University, in the 800.

Vercollone had the 13th-fastest time in the 800-meter run in Division 2 this season and the third fastest in the Northeast-10 Conference with his indoor career-best 1:52.71, finishing 21st out of 128 and 11th out of collegiate runners.

Four BSU winners: Joseph Zingarelli broke his own Bridgewater State pole vault record at the Wheaton Invitational, placing fourth at 13-3.

Winning events for the Bears were Austin James (shot put), Jamie Carlson (heptathlon), Lamont Haynes (400) and Joshua Moore (long jump).

 

Women’s basketball

SUBHEAD Massasoit 82, Springfield Tech 57: Courtney Foley of Holbrook had 21 points, five assists and four steals as the Warriors improved to 6-9 with their third win in four games.

Sienna Johnson of Brockton added 19 points and eight rebounds and her sister, Sierra, had 18 points. Also in double figures were Jakiyah Jones-Robinson of Holbrook (11) and Karen Snow (10).

 

Men’s basketball

Massasoit 66, Springfield Tech 47: Rael Handy of Easton (27 points, eight rebounds, four assists) led the Warriors to their fourth straight win, improving to 13-5. Mark Munroe added 14 points and 13 rebounds.

 

Hockey

 Post 5, Stonehill 4: Ryan Meade, Cameron Wright, Nicholas Godin, and Shamus Maloney scored for the Skyhawks (5-12-2).
