ROCKFORD — Rockford native Fred VanVleet scored a career-high 25 points in only 20 minutes Sunday night to lead the Raptors in Toronto to a 123-111 victory over Los Angeles and snap the Lakers’ four-game winning streak.
VanVleet scored 12 points in the second quarter to help Toronto take a 59-49 halftime lead. VanVleet, a second-year backup point guard, shot 9-for-13, including 3-for-4 on 3-pointers. He also had four assists, two steals, two rebounds and zero turnovers.
VanVleet, who led Auburn to a third-place finish at state as a senior, the second-highest finish by a NIC-10 team in the last 60 years, set his previous career high with 22 points on Jan. 11 in a win over Cleveland. He had 19 points — his third-highest total — Wednesday in a win over Atlanta.
VanVleet is averaging 10.4 points in his last 14 games, shooting 52 percent (50-for-96) from the field over that stretch. On the season, he is averaging 7.1 points, 2.8 assists, 2.2 rebounds and shooting 41 percent.
VanVleet was a two-time Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year at Wichita State. In high school, he led Auburn to its first two NIC-10 titles in 38 years.
The victory ensured Toronto (33-15) will have the second-best record in the Eastern Conference through Feb. 4, meaning coach Dwane Casey will coach Team LeBron at next month’s All-Star Game in Los Angeles. Boston’s Brad Stevens, whose Celtics lead the East, is ineligible after coaching in last year’s game.
