A schoolgirl was raped allegedly by a youth in Bakshiganj upazila of the district yesterday.
Police arrested Akash Miah, 20, son of Ena Miah of Mesherchar Purbopara village, in this connection.
The 13-year-old victim is a Class V student of a government primary school in the area, said police.
Family members said when the girl went out of their house to respond to the call of nature around 5:00am, neighbour Akash forcibly took her to a nearby land. He raped the victim and fled the scene.
Hearing screams, locals rushed to the spot, rescued the girl and sent her to Jamalpur General Hospital, said Aslam Hossain, officer-in-charge of Bakshiganj Police Station.
