Safety warnings from the railways and multiple foot overbridges at stations be damned, Mumbaikars will still tempt death by crossing railway tracks, according to the railway death figures compiled by the Mumbai railway police between January and December 2017.
The category under which the highest number of people have lost their lives is track crossing, followed by commuters falling from the train and hitting against poles. A significant number of people have also died due to natural causes or illnesses and suicides. While the total number of deaths amounts to 3,014, the top stations with highest death rate are Borivli on the Western Railway, and Thane on the main line of Central Railway and Mankhurd on the harbour line. The figures have been compiled from all 113 railway stations that fall under the jurisdiction of 17 railway police stations on the Mumbai suburban railway.
