POOL WARS: The race for a spot could finally be over

For years holidaymakers have faced the daily dash to secure the best spots with their towels.

Yet the famous long-running duel could be over thanks to travel giant Thomas Cook.

Brits can now pay £22 to book a specific sun lounger for the duration of their holiday.

Viral videos posted online shown desperate hotel guests waiting in the early hours for pools to open to toss their towels down.

“Traditional package holidays are a thing of the past”

But now Thomas Cook believes its bookings solution will prove popular with families who want to spend time together at the pool.

Deckchairs will be displayed on a map featuring a compass to help users work out whether certain areas will be in the sun or shade at a certain time of day.

Only a proportion of hotel sunbeds will be bookable to ensure there are still enough for those who do not want to pay the premium.

The scheme is set to be tested in European hotels from the end of February and will be available in 30 hotels this summer.

Managing director Chris Mottershead said: “Traditional package holidays are a thing of the past.

“Holidaymakers today want to personalise their package, mixing and matching the elements that best fit their needs and lifestyle.

“We’re excited about the opportunity with Choose Your Favourite Sunbed, particularly among families that want to secure a number of beds together.”
