20 years ago (1998)

Cass County history books will read: "The county had separate auditor and treasurer offices for its first 101 years." The board discussed it for an hour before voting unanimously to combine the offices. Treasurer Marge Daniels retires in May, making the transition easier.

30 years ago (1988)

(Photo) Brainerd VFW commander Roy Schellin samples a donut this morning at the Senior Citizens Center. Marilyn Sturad offers him a second while Marguerite Christensen tends the machine. The automatic donut machine was purchased with funds from the VFW Club.

40 years ago (1978)

You'll always remember her special blend of warmth and wit, kindness and concern, instruction and discipline. And that would be the description of Sarah Yatckoske, Edison 3rd grade teacher. She started teaching in a one-room school 30 years ago and today is Brainerd's Teacher of the Year.

60 years ago (1958)

(Photo) This stained glass window, recently installed above the altar in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, will be dedicated Sunday by its rector Rev. Edward G. Barrow. It was given by the late Sarah Gardner in memory of her family and of Rev. C.M. Brandon, former rector.

100 years ago (1918)

The draft board's doctors were stumped when Tom "Fat" Woods arrived for his physical and stepped on the scale, which can only handle 400 pounds. He almost broke it. They sent him to the freight scales which reported him at 503 pounds. He was too big to enlist, though he's tried four times.
