The Election Commission had announced the schedule of the mayoral by-polls to Dhaka North and elections to 36 new wards of the two Dhaka city corporations with the balloting slated for Feb 26.
The High Court halted the mayoral polls and the elections to the 18 new wards of Dhaka North for six months on Jan 17 and the 18 new wards of Dhaka South the next day for four months.
With the countdown to the parliamentary elections starting on Oct 30 and elections to five city corporations in near future, observers see little scope for the polls to the Dhaka city corporations being held if the EC does not challenge the stay orders.
