Two men were arrested on Sunday morning in south-east Delhi for allegedly snatching a mobile phone and making a fake call regarding bag snatching to cover their tracks, the police said.
Arjun Singh and his friend Chetan Kumar, both 25, are residents of Khanpur, the police said.
Late night incident
Kamod Yadav had called the police control room at 11.45 p.m. on January 27 stating that two men on a scooty had snatched his mobile phone near Mata Mandir and fled.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (south-east) Chinmoy Biswal said the accused were near Modi Mill flyover when they realised they had dropped their bag containing a mobile tablet and one identity card at the spot. Fearing arrest, they decided to call the police control room pretending that their bag had been snatched by two youths on a scooty in New Friends Colony.
While Arjun, who had snatched Mr. Yadav’s phone, stayed back at Modi Mill flyover, Chetan went near Mata Mandir to make the fake complaint at 11.25 p.m.
Two calls
“Mr. Yadav’s phone was snatched around 11.10 p.m. The victim, who lives near the crime spot, went home to get another mobile phone. He returned to the spot and called the police at 11.45 p.m. Meanwhile, the robbers called the police at 11.25 p.m. After getting two calls regarding robbery from the same spot, a team swung into action swiftly,” added Mr. Biswal.
The contradictions in Chetan’s story led to his interrogation on Sunday morning, the police said.
He reportedly confessed to both crimes and told the police that Arjun was waiting for him at Modi Mill flyover. A police team arrested Arjun.
Arjun claims to have won an award in a body building championship in 2015-16. Chetan is a salesman in a mobile showroom in Lajpat Nagar.
