LAND O LAKES, Wis. (WSAW) --- According to a press release from the Vilas County Sheriff's Office, one person was killed Saturday when a snowmobile struck a tree.
The victim is identified as 43-year-old Shawn C. Sarver from Metamora, Illinois.
At 2:17 p.m., Vilas County officials received a 911 call reporting a snowmobile crash in the area of Forest Road and Big Portage Lake Road in the Town of Land O Lakes.
Officials said the initial investigation disclosed that Sarver was operating off the marked snowmobile trail when he stuck a tree. He was pronounced dead on the scene, and speed appeared to be a contributing factor.
Land O Lakes Rescue and Ambulance, the Vilas County Sheriff's Office, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Vilas County Coroner's Office all responded to the scene.
The crash is under investigation by the DNR and the Vilas County Coroner's Officer.
