The Rajasthan bypolls come ahead of the assembly elections in the state later this year.

Jaipur:  By-elections are being held today in two parliamentary seats in Rajasthan and an assembly seat in the state in what is seen as a test of the electoral preparedness of the Vasundhra Raje-led BJP government ahead of the state elections later this year. The bypolls are taking place four days after the release of the film "Padmaavat". The Rajputs, nearly two lakh voters in Ajmer, have decided to vote against the ruling BJP after they were upset over the film's release. The film was not screened in Rajasthan

  1. Polling is being held in the Lok Sabha seats of Ajmer and Alwar, and the assembly seat of Mandalgarh in Rajasthan. Voting is from 8 am to 6 pm. The votes will be counted on Thursday.
  2. Eleven candidates in Alwar, 23 in Ajmer and eight candidates in Mandalgarh are in the fray.
  3. In Ajmer, 6,000 security personnel have been sent to ensure smooth polling. 5,000 security personnel have been sent to Alwar.
  4. In a first, EVM machines with photos of candidates on them would be used for polling machines to avoid confusion among voters about different candidates with same names.
  5. Close to 39 lakh voters will vote at over 4,000 polling booths in the three constituencies.
  6. Today's polling assumes significance after the Rajput groups - upset over the release of "Padmaavat" - declared that they would vote against the BJP. In Rajasthan, distributors refused to screen film, citing protests.
  7. All the three seats - Ajmer, Alwar and Mandalgarh have been held by the BJP.
  8. The Congress is trying to cash in on the anti-incumbency. The party, whose state chief is Sachin Pilot, hopes that winning even a single seat could be a big morale booster after its defeat in the last state elections.
  9. The three seats fell vacant due to the deaths of its BJP lawmakers last year.
  10. Bypolls are being held today in West Bengal too with voting in Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency and Noapara assembly seat amid tight security.
