James Corden hosted the 60th annual music awards show, which aired live from New York City's Madison Square Garden.

Alessia Cara won the Grammy for best new artist on Sunday night.

Cara beat out Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert, Julia Michaels and SZA for the award.

"Holy cow," Cara said as she took the stage. "Wow. I'm shaking. I've been pretend winning Grammys since I was a kid in the shower so you'd think I'd have the speech thing down but I don't."

Still she used her time to thank her family, her team at her label, the Grammys and her fans, calling out the latter as the reason she doesn't have to pretend to win awards in the shower anymore. Cara also encouraged the audience to support "real music" that might not get wider acknowledgment.

"Everyone deserves the same shot," she said, adding of her win as she got played off the stage, "My mind is blown."

Cara went into Sunday night's Grammys nominated for three other awards, including song of the year for her contribution to Logic's anti-suicide song "1-800-273-8255."

Before Cara accepted her award, presenter Nick Jonas pointed out that "best new artist" is an award a musician can't win twice, and he and fellow presenter Kelly Clarkson named Tom Jones, Cyndi Lauper, Alicia Keys, Sade and Maroon 5 as past winners in the category.
