DUBAI: A transit passenger, who assaulted a Dubai airport corporal, will serve six months in prison plus deportation, the Criminal Court ruled on Jan.28.

The Australian man, 53, was transiting via Dubai from London on Jul.25, 2017. At around 7am a technical glitch forced the international carrier in which he was flying to Sydney to delay the flight for a day.

He and other passengers were deplaned after four hours of waiting on board the carrier that was supposed to take off at 8.30am. They were provided a hotel stay near Dubai International Airport.

When asked by customs inspectors to have his luggage searched, he turned rowdy and refused to place his luggage in the scanning device. The inspectors failed to talk him into having his luggage searched.

They called up the Emirati corporal, 28. As the latter tried to convince him to have his luggage searched, the defendant repeatedly shouted and angrily refused, claiming he had been on a long flight.

A lieutenant instructed the cop to handcuff him for questioning. He grabbed the cop by the shirt and violently resisted. He slumped with the cop on the floor. The cop sustained left knee and ankle injuries.
