The Charkha Museum at Palika Bazar Park in Connaught Place has become major tourist attraction. According to the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) chairman VK Saxena, a total 82,306 people have so far visited the Museum since its opened seven months ago.
According to the KVIC chairman a, around 3000 people visited on January 1, 2018 on the occasion of first day of the new year. Saxena said the museum has become a hot tourist hub in the national Capital and added that around 2,000 people visited on the Republic Day this year. “This place once used by drug peddlers and anti-social elements has now become a landmark of Delhi,” he said.
In the Gangaben kuttir in the museum, women are imparted training on Charkha. Charkha was introduced to Gandhi ji by Gangaben.
The KVIC chairman said that the entry ticket, which is priced at a modest Rs 20, uniquely displays a tri-colour khadi mala. The Commission has earned revenue to the tune of Rs 16,46,120 through entry ticket.
BJP president Amit Shah had unveiled a 12-feet tall and 25-feet long steel Charkha and inaugurated a heritage Charkha Museum at Palika Bazar Park last year.
The charkha installed by KVIC, is made of high-quality chromium nickel stainless steel and is corrosion resistant, non-magnetic and not hardenable by heat. A white marble statue of Mahatma Gandhi was also installed at the museum.
The 12-feet tall and 25-feet long spinning charkha has been made by Prayog Samiti, a KVIC unit, near Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat from high quality stainless steel donated by Steel Authority of India (SAIL).
